The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department will host a free event called “Pitch, Hit and Run,” Saturday at 9 a.m. The competition is part of a Major League Baseball initiative to engage youth players.
It will take place at Field No. 1 at the Duffy Baseball Complex in Mount Pleasant. Boys and girls – playing softball – are divided into the following age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14. Competitors have the opportunity to advance through four stages, including the Team Championships at MLB ballparks and the National Finals at the MLB All-Star Game.
Individual winners from the pitching, hitting and running portions, along with the all-around champion in each age and gender advance to sectionals. Participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have parent or legal guardian sign a registration/waiver form before competing.

The Free for All tennis tournament is back.
The adult men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles tournament, which is free for players, will be held April 29-May 5 at The Club at Dunes West, according to club tennis director Jack Miller.
Player receive a t-shirt and adult beverages all week. Awards for winners and runner-up finishers in each event will also be presented. Interested participants can sign up by going to the USTA website. The tournament ID number is 700096613. The deadline is April 24.
Miller said the event was started years ago and sponsorships allowed it be a free event. But, “after a tough economy, we were having to charge a small fee to players...it was no longer the 'Free for All.'”
The tennis club later lost a memmber, Lorrie Jelenevsky, from a brain tumor. She was known as Lorrie J. “I later learned that one of her last wishes was to make the tournament free again,” Miller said, “so she left some money, and with the help of our sponsors, we are able to make this event free again.”
The event is now named in her honor: Lorrie J's Adult Free for All. Direct questions to Miller at email@example.com or 345-2995.
