Police were called to Coleman Boulevard because of a domestic disturbance between a couple in their car.
They found the male portion of this couple who said that he and his wife drove down from Chesnee to Columbia to take care of some tax issues. Afterwards they decided to drive down to Charleston to get some good seafood. They went to Shem Creek and had dinner and drinks without incident.
The husband said they got in the car and were driving to a hotel when he noticed his wife was driving dangerously. He said he asked her to pull over so she would not endanger anyone else on the road. He said she refused, according to the report. So he started grabbing for the keys to take them out of the ignition and she started slapping at his hands and scratching him, he told police.
The report said he gave up and got out of the car. The wife threatened to call 911 so he did it for her. He said she then took off and he did not know in which direction she had gone.
As police were speaking with the man they noticed a bottle of beer broken near the car and an empty six pack holder of the same kind of beer. The man denied knowing anything about the beer or the bottle.
The report said the man was not cooperative in giving information about the events.
The female half was finally located and her story was completely different. She said the argument started over the tip she left. He paid the bill on a credit card and she paid the tip. But the man accussed her of being like his ex-wife and not paying the tip at all.
She said she proved to him that she paid a $30 tip but the man was still irate.
She said they left the restaurant, and the man started grabbing for the keys. She pulled over and he got out of the car. She said he grabbed the beer out of the container and started throwing it into the car and she threw it back at him where the one bottle must have broken.
She said they had a couple of beers on the drive down from Columbia.
Police could not prove that either party was trying to harm the other, and the argument seemed to be over. They were taken to separate hotels for the evening and the car was left in a nearby parking lot.
