Library programs offer indoor way to enjoy spring

  • Tuesday, April 23, 2013

All winter long we shiver and look forward to spring.

Then spring arrives and we complain about pollen, fatigue and bugs.

When summer arrives we sweat too much to enjoy ourselves and in the fall we have endless piles of leaves to rake and bag (don’t even get me started about the folks who burn them).

It’s spring, and if you can’t tell, I’m a bit grouchy. Maybe it’s allergies.

The library has a few books that may help you – and me – banish our spring fatigue, allergies and bugs.

To combat fatigue: “No More Fatigue: Why You’re So Tired and What You Can Do About It” by Jack Challem, “What Nurses Know - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” by Lorraine Steefel and “The Exhaustion Cure: Up Your Energy from Low to Go in 21 days” by Laura Stack.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, try “Action Plan for Allergies” by William Briner or “Allergies Sourcebook” by Amy Sutton.

For kids needing to cope with allergies, try “How to Deal with Allergies” by Lynette Robbins. To discover why modern humans are plagued by allergies, check out “An Epidemic of Absence: A New Way of Understanding Allergies and Autoimmune Diseases” by Moises Velasquez-Manoff.

Unwanted pests? Read “Tiny Game Hunting: Environmentally Healthy Ways to Trap and Kill the Pests in Your House and Garden” by Hilary Klein, or “The Bed Bug Book: The Complete Guide to Prevention and Extermination” by Ralph Maestre.

Too grouchy for a book? The Charleston County Library has plenty of action movies for you to check out, including “Black Death,” “Red Tails,” “Cell 211” and “Season of the Witch.”

If you’re looking for an indoor strategy to escape that nasty spring pollen, I hope you’ll attend a free library program.

At Mount Pleasant Regional, we have plenty to choose from.
