Academic Magnet ranks No. 10 among nation's top high schools, per U.S. News

  • Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Academic Magnet High School received high praise Tuesday afternoon when U.S. News & World Report released its top 10 high schools of 2013. The Raptors were slotted at No. 10.

According to the U.S. News webpage for Academic Magnet, which includes research into test scores, district data and class size, the magnet school located in North Charleston also cracked the top 10 for South Carolina schools and magnet schools. In the state, it's No. 1 and among magnets, it's No. 2.

“All courses offered at Academic Magnet High School are either honors or Advanced Placement courses, and every student completes a year-long independent research project,” the website noted. “Students' work has been published in multiple academic and professional journals. The school's new campus keeps students connected with Wi-Fi access in the cafeteria, a media center and three computer labs.”

Student-to-teacher ratio is 15:1 with a total student enrollment of 610. U.S. News also calculates a “College Readiness Index” measuring proficiency in math and English. Numbers are generated from student performance on state exit exams and AP/IB exams. The Raptors earned perfect marks – 100 percent in both math and English and a College Readiness Index of 100.

Perhaps the most interesting statistics were found in studies of the rest of the school district. Among 15 total schools of 13,069 students, English proficiency was 54 percent, math proficiency was 45 percent and College Readiness was 17.3.

Academic Magnet principal Judith Peterson did not immediately return a request for comment.
