Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission to meet in Conway

The four-state Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission will hold its second quarterly meeting at 9 a.m. May 17 at Cherry Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 504 Church St. in Conway. The public is invited.

Meeting highlights will include updates on the management plan; internal administrative operations, including vacant commissioner slots; tax-deductible status of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Foundation; and potential partnerships. The three areas of proposed program and project implementation involve education, documentation and preservation or economic development throughout the corridor. An update also will be given about the BN Duke Scholars Program of Duke University, Durham, N.C., which is serving the Gullah Geechee Commission via a 10-week student internship program in Conway from May–July.

Students will assist community organization in developing the Gullah Geechee Commission’s implementation efforts.

Chairman Ronald Daise said, “Numerous organizations have expressed an interest in partnering with us, and we are pleased to see a growing appreciation and awareness of Gullah Geechee culture. We are readying to ensure policies and procedures are set so that we can move forward as effectively as possible when the anticipated approval of the management plan is received.”
