Susan G. Komen for the Cure awards community grants to local nonprofits

On April 2, the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded more than $500,000 to 10 local nonprofits at its annual grants award reception. The awarded grants will help fund breast health education, screening, diagnostic and survivor support services to the local communities within Komen Lowcountry Affiliate’s 17-county service area for the 2013 fiscal year.

2013 grant recipients:

• Alala Cancer Society ($28,500)

• Allendale County Hospital ($59,080)

• Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic ($31,050) - Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health ($59,759)

• Best Chance Network ($76,054)

• McLeod Health ($52,988)

• The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg & Calhoun Counties ($47,000)

• Roper St. Francis Healthcare/ Roper St. Francis Foundation ($82,305)

• Smith Medical Center ($17,429)

• Volunteers in Medicine ($70,449)

Grant recipients are chosen through a highly competitive, peer reviewed process. In order to insure it is funding programs addressing the greatest barriers to care, the Affiliate works with civic leaders and health care professionals to conduct a thorough community needs assessment. Since 2001, the affiliate has invested more than $5 million in its 17-county service area.

The affiliate’s annual Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure is the organization’s largest fundraiser that goes toward funding community health grants. To learn more about the grant recipients, visit komenlowcountry.org/grants/current-grant-recipients.
