Hospice of Charleston honors volunteers
On Friday, April 26 Hospice of Charleston celebrated with an afternoon tea at the home of Dr. Stuart and Louise Owens. Dr. Owens is one of the group’s six medical directors and the tea was held to celebrate the 107 volunteers who make up Hospice of Charleston’s volunteer team.
The volunteer team at Hospice of Charleston has provided more than 6,000 hours of volunteer support in the past year to hospice patients, their caregivers and to the assistance of the Hospice of Charleston staff. Many of the volunteers at Hospice of Charleston have been supporting the organization since they began providing services to terminally ill patients in the Charleston’s Tricounty area in 1981.
Hospice is one of the only federally funded programs that requires volunteers as an additional support in the way of companionship, social/emotional support and household support. The volunteers at Hospice of Charleston are a group who understands that “it is not what they give nor what they get but what they become in the process of volunteering.”
