New program lends out recycling bins for parties/events
Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department has developed the Special Event Recycling Program to effectively recycle waste generated at special events held throughout Charleston County.
Charleston County now offers the use of ClearStream recycling bins for the collection of recyclables and food waste at special events.
The county will loan the bins to community groups, nonprofit organizations, businesses and citizens who plan to collect recyclables and food waste produced at their special events.
“The Special Event Recycling Program is another way in which Charleston County residents are helping to save resources and extend the life of our landfill,” said Charleston County Councilmember Anna Johnson, who chairs council’s Recycling/Solid Waste Committee.
“By participating in the program, residents are helping to achieve the council’s 40 percent recycling goal while enjoying the wonderful events our area has to offer.”
The ClearStream recycling bins consist of a steel frame and lid, and up to five collection bags are provided per bin. The bins are highly visible and the lids are labeled with decals that designate what items can be recycled, including: plastic bottles and aluminum cans, paper and compostables (such as food waste).
Up to 15 bins are available for special events, depending on projected event attendance. The county’s Special Event Recycling Program enables event attendees to easily dispose of and collect recyclable materials, which results in a reduction in the trash produced at the event.
To reserve recycling bins for an event:
Reservations should be made at least 30 days prior to an event. To reserve bins, contact Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department at 720-7111.
There is no charge to use the bins, but a refundable deposit is required when picking the bins to ensure that the equipment will be returned in the same condition.
The Special Event Recycling Program provides equipment for onsite collection of materials, but does not include the removal of materials after an event for processing.
