Make library first stop when planning vacation

  • Monday, May 13, 2013

It’s less than a month until school is out for the summer and time to start planning vacations. Susan Sloate, local author and Walt Disney World enthusiast, can help if you are planning a trip to the Magic Kingdom. Sloate has visited Walt Disney World numerous times and will present a program at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library on budgeting, dining, hotels and other special tips for your Disney vacation. For instance, do you know how to get to ride in the front of the monorail? Is there a way to avoid long lines? Where are the best places to dine and stay? Join us in the library’s auditorium May 11, 1-2 p.m. for Susan Sloate’s informative program.

We are often asked if the library has travel books. The answer is “Yes – and we also have travel DVDs.” Whether you’re going on a grand European tour or staying at home to visit local sights, the library has many travel books to help you plan a great vacation. It’s a good idea to be well-informed about your destination. Advance planning can make the difference between a memorable vacation and a disaster. Don’t arrive at your destination and find that the museum you really wanted to visit is closed, or that the restaurant you wanted to try is fully booked.

The “DK Eyewitness Travel Guides” is an excellent and very detailed series that can help you plan trips. Some of the titles are “Family Guide Washington DC: Where to Play, What to See, Where to Stay,” “New Orleans,” “New England,” “Top 10 California Wine Country,” “Walt Disney World Resort and Orlando” and “Southwest USA and Las Vegas.” These guides include detailed maps, color photos and tips.

Do you dislike driving for hours on interstate highways? “Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America’s Two-Lane Highways” by Jamie Jensen is a book that provides information on scenic highways and off-the-beaten-track sights.

The USA is blessed with wonderful National Parks, and the “National Geographic Guide to National Parks of the United States” is a fantastic guide. Divided into regions, it has information on camping, hiking, scenic drives, lodging and dining. Did you know that South Carolina has a National Park just 20 miles southeast of Columbia? A visit to the Congaree National Park makes a very nice day trip, and there is no entrance fee.

If your budget doesn’t allow a vacation away from home this year, there are plenty of things to do in our beautiful area. The Michelin guide, “Charleston, Savannah and the South Carolina Coast,” even includes a mention of the Pitt Street Pharmacy, located in Mount Pleasant’s Old Village.
