SOA students compete in Optimist International contest

The 2012-2013 Optimist International Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, “Why My Voice is Important,” was held on Friday, April 19 at the SOA Media Center. This club level event was sponsored by the West Ashley Optimist Club.

The club level winners, all SOA students were; Alexandria Canadias – First Place, John Small – Second Place, and Makayla Middleton – Third Place. Canadias and Small compete in the District Contest which took place on May 9 in Spartanburg at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind.

The Optimist Oratorical Contest gives students the chance to speak to the world. More than $150,000 in college scholarships funded by the Optimist International Foundations is awarded annually from this program. SOA whole heartedly supports this effort.

First conducted in 1928, this is the second most popular Optimist International Program. Nearly 2,000 clubs participate in this program each year. The winners at the club level receive medallions and Zone winners receive a plaque. Districts have the opportunity to provide two $2,500 scholarships or a first place scholarship of $2,500, a second place scholarship of $1,500, and a third place scholarship of $1,000.

The winner of the 2011-2012 District Contest and the $2,500 scholarship was Storm Harvey of the Academic Magnet High School.
