Charleston Broadway Dance Ensemble offers premiere of ‘Little Shop’

  • Wednesday, May 15, 2013

The Charleston Broadway Dance Ensemble (CBDE) is a regional student dance company presenting the most recent performance genre to hit Broadway, the “Dansical.” The Dansical is an in depth choreographic project by which dancers take a story based on the musical theatre format and translate it entirely into dance vocabulary. In this program, not only will the dancers use Broadway’s jazz technique, but will also interpret through the vernacular of ballet and modern dance styles. The company consists of 21 talented dancers from the Charleston area, with ages ranging from 10-17, who were chosen through an audition for this year’s production.

“Little Shop” tells the story of Seymour, played by principal dancer Jonathan Tabbert, and Audrey, played by School of the Arts senior Ann Pitner, and their dreams of a better life outside of Skid Row. Their ticket out may come from turning around a failing local flower shop. The ever-growing out of this world plant known as “Audrey II,” played by company dancers Monica Barlow, Emily Lamm and Anna Lanier, may by the key to their success; or will it? The eye popping magic of the Broadway stage will come to life with brilliant costuming as well as elaborated full stage sets by local designer Buchannan Arts.

CBDE’s director Stephen Gabriel is a veteran of the Charleston arts community with numerous Piccolo Spoleto offerings including “Off to Oz” and “The Little Mermaid.” His unique style and mastery as a performance coach creates not only a marvelous production but also an incredibly professional work experience for the talented young artist in the company.

Charleston Broadway Dance Ensemble has had the privilege of participating in outreach work with Courageous Kidz and Medical University of South Carolina’s Child Life Atrium, and is now pleased to present Little Shop to the Charleston community.

“Little Shop” will be performed at the Rose Maree Myers Theatre of Performing Arts, Charleston County School of the Arts on June 9 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 (Adult) and $10 (Child) General Admission, available at the door or by contacting the Charleston Dance Institute at 843-284-8151
