A concerned citizen walking the bridge one afternoon quickly called police to report that a man wearing a blue raincoat had climbed the rail and jumped off the bridge.
Police arrived and interviewed pedestrians in the area but no one saw anything suspicious. In the meantime emergency responders from Charleston, Mount Pleasant, EMS and the Coast guard deployed.
An officer made contact with the complainant. She was given a ride in his patrol car. As they were traveling they came across a blue tarp wrapped around a pole on the bridge. It turns out that the way the tarp was wrapped around the pole made it look as if someone were climbing the railing.
The search for a jumper was then called off.
