The Baker Motor Company company awarded the first recipients of the new Tommy B. Baker Scholarship Fund. Kyle Wicks, son of Baker employee Jim Wicks, and Shavonna Simmons, wife of Baker employee Herbert Simmons, were each presented with a $2,500 college scholarship from the Tommy B. Baker Scholarship Fund. Tommy Baker, owner and president of Baker Motor Company in Charleston and Mount Pleasant and Baker Buick GMC Cadillac in Charleston, made the announcement May 16.

Each year the Tommy B. Baker Scholarship Fund will award a $2,500 scholarship to two recipients to assist with furthering his or her education. The award is given to full time Baker Motor Company employee spouses or children. In order to participate, the applicant must be a full-time student enrolled at any accredited undergraduate two-year or four-year college, university, community college, technical college or trade school. Recipients may pursue whatever field of study they wish.

Jim Wicks is father of one of the recipients, Kyle Wicks, and has been a Land Rover, Jaguar, Porsche and Maserati sales consultant with the company for more than three years. Wicks added, “The cost of college continues to rise and this will go a long way. As employees, Mr. Baker treats us very well and we’re grateful. He doesn’t have to do this, but he does.” Kyle Wicks is graduating from Bishop England High School in May and heading to Clemson University in the fall to major in engineering.

The second recipient, Shavonna Simmons, is wife to Herbert Simmons who is a collision center technician at Baker Motor Company. Shavonna Simmons is a mother of four and has wanted to attend nursing school since 2009 when she began taking prerequisite classes at Trident Technical College. She currently works two jobs – one in a doctor’s office and the other at a hospital. This $2,500 is invaluable to Simmons in furthering her education.

Simmons added, “I am forever grateful to Mr. Baker and his committee for having such a program and a great heart to extend it to the spouses of his employees. I’m honored to be one of the recipients of the scholarship to help fulfill my nursing career. Mr. Tommy Baker you touched my life more than you know and I will never forget it!”
