The Bishop England baseball team placed two players, Zack Madden and Cameron Garrett, on the 2A all-state team, as voted on by the state coaches association. The Battling Bishops lost to Chesnee in the state championship series.

In 4A, no Wando players made the all-state team, but former Warrior Nick Ciuffo earned the Player of the Year honor. Ciuffo played for Wando his freshman and sophomore years before finishing his high school career with Lexington.

Ciuffo, who signed with South Carolina, is expected to be a late first-round selection in the upcoming MLB Draft in June. Most predictions place him in the low 20s pick range.

FOOTBALL

The 43nd annual Sertoma Football Classic field is set, and East Cooper football teams have tough tests.

Bishop England, a two-time defending champion in 2A, will play two quarters against 4A foe Summerville, Aug. 23. In the previous Sertoma Classic, the Bishops played Stratford and were able to finally end the battle for starting quarterback.

The job went to Nick Theos, who played more confidently than Nick Herbst in the preseason scrimmage. Later in the season, Herbst took over for an injured Theos and led Bishop England to a state championship.

Both quarterbacks have graduated, as have standouts DeAngelo Stephenson, Griffie Loy, Drew Costa and Zach Richter, among others.

Wando, coming off its best regular season in program history, will play 2A perennial contender Hanahan for a pair of a quarters, Aug. 22. The Warriors lost its linebacker corps: Zach Dauscher, Babe Thomas, Stevie Wilson and Blaine Thompson. On the offensive end, Christian Hart, Nate Wright, Cameron Rouse and Casey Clawson are also gone to graduation.

Palmetto Christian Academy starts the string of Aug. 23 game with a scrimmage against Kingstree. With the exception of wide receivers Bayne Hirshman and Adam Graudin, the Eagles return most of its offensive weapons, including four-year quarterback starter J.T. Waters.

Defensively, Palmetto Christian must find alternatives to offset the losses of linebackers Conner Treece and Graham Blunt.

Sertoma is held at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium.
