Fiery Ron’s Home Team heads up Southern Living BBQ awards

  • Friday, May 31, 2013

Southern Living reveals the 2013 ’Cue Awards in its June issue, which hit newsstands May 24. The brand honors the best rib joints in the South, as determined by Southern Living readers.

More than 13,000 fans rallied behind their favorite “Rib-Stickin’ Joints” and voted over a one-week period. Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ in Charleston was named the reigning rib champion. Southern Soul Barbeque in St. Simons Island, GA came in second.

“Southern Living is thrilled to preach the gospel of a culinary rite that feeds the Southern soul,” said editor Lindsay Bierman in a news release. “We hope our second-annual ’cue awards will serve as your bible of barbecue.”

Southern Living announces the “Best Rib-Stickin’ Joints” as ranked by voters:

1. Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ, Charleston – Aaron Siegel breaks all the old-school BBQ rules at this juke joint-inspired hangout. When it comes to ribs, he’s a purist: red oak, a simple dry rub, no basting, no sauce.

2. Southern Soul Barbeque, St. Simons Island, Ga. – Come for the salt- and sugar-cured ribs, smoked rotisserie-style and glazed with pan drippings, and righteous hoppin’ John.

3. Sam’s BBQ1, Marietta, Ga. – These lightly lacquered baby backs pretty much own Atlanta.

4. Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, Decatur, Ala. – St. Louis-cut spareribs are the perfect marriage of meat, spice and hickory smoke.

5. Corky’s Ribs & BBQ, Memphis, Tenn. – This East Memphis landmark dishes up everything from barbecue nachos and tamales to sides of spaghetti.

Runners-Up Include:

6. Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, locations around the South

7. Charles Vergos’ Rendezvous, Memphis, Tenn.

8. Dreamland BBQ, locations in AL and Ga.

9. Central BBQ, Memphis, Tenn.

10. The Salt Lick, Driftwood, Texas

11. Hubba Hubba Smokehouse, Flat Rock, N.C.

12. Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, Austin, Texas

13. Archibald’s Drive In, Northport, Ala.

14. The Shed Barbecue & Blues Joint, Locations in Miss. and Ala.

15. The Bar-B-Q Shop, Memphis, Tenn.

The list is part of a 10-page barbecue package featuring editors’ favorite restaurants, blue ribbon recipes from the brand’s trusted Test Kitchen and more. In “The Perfect Pit Stop,” Executive Editor Hunter Lewis visits Allen & Son Barbeque in his hometown, Chapel Hill, N.C., and learns how to make the perfect chopped pork sandwich.

“The Ultimate Smoky, Sweet Ribs” features the winner of the Southern Living Test Kitchen rib recipe smackdown, Memphis native Pam Lolley. She shares techniques for creating the perfect ribs in a smoker, grill (charcoal or gas) or oven. For winning sides, Southern Living mapped out the best in coleslaw in a “Region-by-Region Guide” that covers creamy, crunchy slaw recipes from the Carolinas to Texas.

The award for “Biggest Comeback” goes to a Tenneessee joint. “The Sweetest Smoke” pays tribute to Sam’s Bar-B-Q in Humboldt that the community helped rebuild after a devastating fire.
