SOA Wind Ensemble awarded highest honor

  • Friday, May 31, 2013

Congratulations to the School of the Arts (SOA) Middle School Wind Ensemble. The Ensemble traveled to Chattanooga, Tenn., to participate in the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational (GNAI) on April 27. Performing against other middle school bands from around the country, the SOA Wind Ensemble received a rating of Superior as well as the highest overall score of all the competing middle school bands. As such, they were awarded the GNAI’s top award, the prestigious Honor Award Plaque. In addition to the overall win for the band, the SOA woodwind section was singled-out in the competition and was awarded the Judge’s Award for Best Overall Woodwind Section.

The recipient of the GRAND NAI Honor Award Plaque is recognized in National Music Publications and at National and State Conventions. The GRAND NAI Honor Group represents all outstanding Concert Performance groups throughout the United States.

The Grand National Adjudicators Invitational is the most prestigious Concert Band and Orchestra Festival presented in America today. Participating groups represent some of the nation’s most outstanding performance ensembles. Bands perform before a panel of distinguished adjudicators (judges) with a special private clinic held after their performance. Awards are presented in a non-competitive atmosphere where evaluations are based on a national rating standard of Superior, Excellent and Good.

The SOA middle school bands consist of approximately 65 sixth, seventh and eighth graders. These students have been selected through an audition process to participate in the band program at SOA. The seventh and eighth graders form the SOA Wind Ensemble. The director of the middle school bands program is Suzanne K. Reed.
