Cool off this summer with movies at the library

  • Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Enjoy a movie in the cool confines of the Mount Pleasant Regional Library this summer.

As of June 1, the Charleston County Public Library is in full summer reading mode. In previous Between the Stacks articles, Jen McQueen and Cindy Schweinfest explained the importance and fun of this annual reading program, so I won’t elaborate on it.

The only thing I want to say is: Join, Dig Into Summer Reading ages 11 and younger, Beneath the Surface ages 12-17, or The Reading Wave for 18 years and up – because reading sparks imagination, imagination fuels creativity and without either, the world would be a much duller place.

Not only does the written word stimulate the part of the brain where imagination springs from, the written word made into a visual art form also contributes to creative exploration.

To accommodate this type of inspiration, the Mount Pleasant Library offers you “Movies at the Library.”

Every Monday during the summer at 2:30 p.m. “Monday Matinee” presents feature films for all ages.

Don’t miss:

“Brave,” on June 10: Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom.

Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

“The Land Before Time” on June 17: Littlefoot, a young plant-eating dinosaur, is orphaned after his mother perishes while protecting him from a vicious carnivore. With her last breath, she tells him how to get to the legendary Great Valley, where he will be reunited with others of his kind.

With his friend Cera, Littlefoot sets out for the fabled land, meeting a variety of new friends along the way – while also being tracked by the killer dinosaur that mortally wounded his mother.

“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” on June 24: A poor boy wins the opportunity to tour the most eccentric and wonderful candy factory of all time. Screenplay and book (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) written by Roald Dahl.

Teens can enjoy movies on Wednesdays starting at 2 p.m: “Holes” on June 12: A wrongfully convicted boy is sent to a brutal desert detention camp where he joins the job of digging holes for some mysterious reason.

Screenplay and book written by Louis Sachar.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” on June 26: Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young.

His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.

Last, but not least, the Mount Pleasant Reel Club discusses the book and the movie “Sense and Sensibility” today, June 5 at 2 p.m.

Never heard of the Reel Club?

It is a monthly program wherein participants read the book and watch the movie.

Afterwards the book and the movie are compared and discussed.
