Weekly roundup: East Cooper track standouts take all-state honors

  • Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Wando assistant track and field coach Tariq Ravenell (center) competed for the Warriors in the 1990s, and still holds a school record in the 4x400 from 1995. He coached the 4x100 relay team this past season that broke an 11-year-old school record and had not been to the state championship meet since 1976. They finished runner up in the event with a personal best time. Members include Angelica Collins, Zeniyah Lawrence, Erika Andrade and Sarah Lee. PHOTO PROVIDED

Wando

The Wando boys track and field had 11 different athletes on the 4A all-state team. Jerome Coaxum, a state champion in the 400 hurdles, was named all-state in that event and the 110 hurdles. A.J. Gawryluk received the honor in the 1600 and 3200 runs, as well as the 4x800 relay.

Hampton Harvin, who broke a 38-year-old high jump school record this season during the Taco Bell Classic, was named all-state in high jump. That record-breaking mark is 6 feet 8 inches.

He signed a scholarship to compete at Coastal Carolina, according to coach Kevin Shiver.

Scottie Stroman made the all-state list in three events: 800, 4x800 relay and 4x400 relay. Joining Stroman and Gawryluk on the 4x800 all-state team was Andrew Roberts and Miles Clarke.

Roberts also earned recognition on the 4x400 relay team. He, Stroman, Coaxum and Christian Hart round out that all-state group.

Kenny Waring (long jump), Gauge Wood (pole vault), Zach Dauscher (pole vault) and Kato Junior (400 hurdles) concluded the rest of the Warrior boys track and field all-state athletes.

The Wando girls placed 10 athletes in all-state qualifications. Georgia Compton and Rosa Marie Compton both earned the honors in the 1600 and 3200 events. Sarah Lee, a state champion in pole vault, was all-state in that, as well as the 4x100 relays.

Angelica Collins was another two-event all-state honoree with qualifying marks in the 4x100 and triple jump. Kendall Mercer (pole vault), Emily Pitts (4x800), Emma Santor (4x800), Zeniyah Lawrence (4x100) and Erika Andrade (4x100) were the other all-state Wando girls.

The Warriors 4x100 relay team “was a big highlight, because this relay (team) broke an 11-year-old school record,” coach Marie Domin said, “and hadn’t even been to the state (championship meet) since 1976. Then, they almost took home hold, but got the silver medal and a huge personal best time.”

Palmetto Christian

The SCISA state coaches’ association honored three Palmetto Christian Academy athletes as all-state players, including two track and field standouts. Annie Pascutti and Joe Siegwald both qualified for the honor, as well as golf and tennis player Chris DeMarco.

Bishop England

A dozen Bishop England boys and girls track and field athletes earned 2A all-state honors. Griffie Loy, who will continue his shot put and discus dominance at Navy in the fall, made the list alongside DeAngelo Stephenson, Alex Righi, Andrew Furmanchik, Cristian Widenhouse and Thomas Hanahan.

On the girls side, Katie Phillips, JoJo Tompkins, Michele Boykin, McKenna Weatherford, Michelle Lussier and Hollis Weatherford made the all-state list for excellence in their respective events.
