Moultrie Middle to Moore: Walk a mile in our shoes

Moultrie Middle School held a shoe drive last week for victims of the devastating tornado in Moore, Okla. The project was brought to the school by an eighth grader, Addison Ware, who had seen the devastation on television. Through a family connection, she knew that Charleston’s local JetBlue airlines had offered to ship shoes to Oklahoma at the request of a JetBlue employee from that area.

While gathering shoes from her own closet, she realized that many students probably had “like new” shoes that would be appreciated by other families who had lost everything. “That’s where the idea came from to ask neighbors and fellow students to bring in good shoes for sending to Moore.”

After the initial requests went out via email, shoes began coming in. “Over the few days, we collected over 300 pairs of shoes in all shapes and sizes – some brand new and some slightly worn, but all good gifts to help them out.” Other students at Moultrie, Garret Mulvey, Madison Frank and Ethan Clark, had a great idea to add a note of encouragement to the shoes and made origami swans with a message to include with the shoes.

It was a great surprise to add and encourage anyone receiving a pair as a gift from Mount Pleasant. The National Guard Auxiliary received the shoes this week to be distributed to the victims there.

The school would like to offer many thanks to all who donated some soles to give a little uplifting to the souls in Moore, Okla., and to JetBlue for shipping the eight huge boxes of shoes to Oklahoma.
