Kickin’ Chicken gives back to the community
The Kickin’ Chicken distributed more than $17,000 to Lowcountry schools, students and non profit organizations at their annual Giving Back Luncheon held on Thursday, May 31 at their West Ashley restaurant.
From April 15 to May 15, the five Lowcountry Kickin’ Chicken restaurants invited neighboring non-profit organizations each Thursday to participate in their Month of Giving. The 20 participating non profits received 10 percent of sales from their particular day totaling more than $12,000 throughout the month long fundraiser. A list of benefiting organizations is listed below.
Two Lowcountry elementary schools also received monies from the restaurant group. Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, both Orange Grove Elementary Charter School and Mason Preparatory School held spirit nights at three of The Kickin’ Chicken restaurants. Throughout the year both schools raised approximately $1,000 each. “We love working with local schools. It’s great seeing the kids get so excited when they see us walk in with our Kickin’ Chicken shirts and Kickin’ Nuggets. We look forward to expanding our reach to other area schools this fall,” says Ryan Wheatley, Operating Partner and General Manager of the West Ashley location.
Two scholarships were also handed out during the event. Sarah Brown and Jessica Baldwin, employees of The Kickin’ Chicken, received $2,000 each to contribute to their college education. Each year, the owners award two to three recipients who embrace the mission of commitment, customer and community both in the restaurant and in their personal lives through school and volunteer activities. Sarah Brown will be attending Emory University in the fall and Jessica Baldwin will be entering her junior year at Clemson. Both have worked at the West Ashley location for a combined five years. The Kickin’ Chicken also has plans to provide a full Culinary Scholarship to Trident Technical College’s Culinary School of Charleston to one of their kitchen employees this fall.
To the team at The Kickin’ Chicken, being a local business means having the responsibility of giving back to the community that supports you. “We are committed to our customers and community and we feel that we can not only raise much-needed funds for these organizations and educational institutions, but we can help educate our guests and staff about the important work these organizations do,” says Chip Roberts, co-founder.
