Thinking ahead might be a lost art. A tragedy often has to be the precursor to change.
Family Circle Stadium officials are trying to stay ahead of the curve. During Friday night's “Lumineers” concert on Daniel Island, concert goers will be subject to heightened security designed to stop the use of fake IDs.
“It's not that we've had problems with it,” Family Circle Tennis Center general manager Bob Moran said, “it's more just trying to create a safe environment...It's being proactive and making sure we're taking the proper steps.”
Spectators will have their IDs scanned by a new piece of technology that can instantly verify the authenticity or alert a fake. The software is currently used by more than 250 venues nationwide. Family Circle Stadium is partners with Miller Lite and Lee Distributors. The software was designed by Bar and Club Stat, which was the recipient of a small business grant from Miller Lite earlier this year, according to a news release.
“MillerCoors isn't interested in having underage customers,” Pam Perri, MillerCoors Responsibility Initiatives manager, said.
The technology complements the existing and ongoing designated driver program at Family Circle. Near the main entrance, there is a booth where attendees can pledge to be a designated driver and receive free gifts. Prizes include a complimentary wristband, water, soft drinks and a $50 gift certificate for a tennis lesson at the Family Circle Tennis Center.
Moran clarified that these pledges do not make those people on call and at the disposal of people needing transportation after the concert. “It's just an incentive to say, 'Hey, be safe,'” he said. “If you come with a group of eight, choose a designated driver. We'll take care of that person when they come through to make it a better experience for them.”
Moran also assured that the ID check software doesn't store names or keep any records. “We want to make sure that there is no underage drinking taking place,” he said. “It's not a problem, but let's not let it get to be a problem.”
After the Lumineers concert Friday night, the Family Circle summer concert series continues with artists that include “Barenaked Ladies,” “Hootie & the Blowfish” and “The Killers.” The full list can be found online at www.familycircletenniscenter.com/concerts.
