The annual Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition was held on Saturday, June 1 at Front Beach on the Isle of Palms. This year was the 25th anniversary of the Sand Sculpting Competition, so all the stops were pulled out for a fun day in the sun. Historically, Piccolo Spoleto showcases local Charleston talent, but the Sand Sculpting competition allowed amateur artists to explore their talent. The event attracted a multitude of competitors and spectators, all who enjoyed watching sand transform into pieces of art.

The competition began promptly at 9 a.m. with the children’s event. The rest of the morning was split between young adult, family and adult events. Individual and team entries were permitted, as long as groups did not exceed four members.

Prizes were awarded to first, second and third in each category, including best architectural, most creative and overall best in show.

With three different age groups and seven different categories, a multitude of participants came out. Participants used shovels, dies, and a multitude of other tools to sculpt their masterpieces.

The contest was fun for one and all and everyone looks forward to coming out again next year and showing what they’re made of.
