Charleston County Government approved funding for a road improvement project to construct additional through lanes in both directions in Mount Pleasant on the Isle of Palms Connector.

The project beings at Highway 17 and ends at Riveria Drive, according to a news release by RoadWise, a program of Charleston County Government. It aims to reduce vehicle congestion on the connector, particularly at the Rifle Range Road intersection.

The project will be funded by the Transportation Sales Tax. RoadWise held a public meeting for community input on the matter Feb. 9 at Whiteside Elementary.

The area of the bridge that goes over the marsh will not be affected.

Cronin gets award

Isle of Palms mayor Dick Cronin was awarded the annual Barrett Lawrimore Tourism Award for Leadership, June 11. It is presented by the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, according to the city’s e-newsletter.

The award recognizes an elected official who prioritizes tourism initiatives. Cronin’s work with the state Department of Revenue on the “reconciliation and reporting of Accomodations Tax,” according to the report, earned him the honor.

It is named after the late Charleston County Council chairman Barrett Lawrimore.
