Post and Courier photographer Paul Zoeller is a man of few words, at least that is what he says about himself. On the other hand, what he captures with his camera sparkles and translates very well to the viewer. Zoeller draws upon his journalism background to connect with his subjects, as a consummate photojournalist.

Before his present gig, however, Zoeller was a surviving freelancer trying to figure it all out. He will share his ups and downs with attendees of the Charleston Center for Photography (CCP) 2nd Monday Lecture Series, coming up on July 8, at 7 p.m.

“I thought it would be good to talk about coming into a market saturated with photographers and attempting to stand out, make a name and carve a niche for myself,” said Zoeller. “Basically, it is to sell yourself so others see your value.”

Zoeller admits the difficulty of walking the road of professional photography. His intent at the lecture is to present his work, yet describe the challenges that brought him from Texas to his Summerville home – and photo success - in the Lowcoountry. He has specialized in editorial, portraiture, sports and documentary photography. His eclectic viewpoint concentrates on location lighting for environmental portraits. In this manner he connects with his subjects. The University of Texas at Arlington awarded Zoeller his photojournalism degree, but his real effort towards being a photography professional had just begun.

Thirteen years later the good struggle continues, and so do the lessons learned. Zoeller shares it all at the CCP 2nd Monday Lecture. Professional and amateur photographers and other visual artists will benefit from Zoeller’s revelations – yet the man of images, and a few, concise, words.
