Special activities offered at Magnolia History Fair

  • Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Along with the History Fair on July 6, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is offering three special activities.

• Master brick maker Rick Owens, storyteller Kitty Wilson-Evans and historian Charles Williams will give presentations in separate settings.

• Owens will be located near the Peacock Café where he will demonstrate how early American bricks were made.

• Wilson-Evans, who portrays an 18th century enslaved worker named Kessie, will be in the History Room at the main house.

• Williams will portray French botanist André Michaux on the verandah of the main house.

The Owen and Wilson-Evans presentations will be ongoing during the History Fair, which will be held from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. Williams will give three one-man portrayals of Michaux at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Michaux explored the former English colonies from 1785 to 1796. His principal mission was to find new tree species to reforest the French countryside, which had been depleted for shipbuilding during wars with Great Britain. Charleston was the base of Michaux’s operation. He was friends with the Drayton family who owned Magnolia, and Michaux’s journals are displayed in Magnolia’s History Room.

A $15 general garden admission will be charged to see these performances. The History Fair is free. For more details, go to www.magnoliaplantation.com.
