It’s time to start thinking about football season? It’s time to start thinking about football season.

Three East Cooper high schools participated in a 7-on-7 tournament at Fort Dorchester this past Saturday. Palmetto Christian Academy, a SCISA 2A program, nearly took down the largest public high school in the state in the Bracket B finale. The Eagles lost to SCHSL 4A power Wando 13-11.

“A lot of buses had already pulled out and we were still playing,” Palmetto Christian coach Jim Daniel told his team after the game. The Eagles beat Stall 30-20, lost to eventual champion Sumter 28-11 and lost to Ashley Ridge 32-30 in the preliminary rounds. Sumter and Ashley Ridge are both SCHSL 4A programs and Stall is SCHSL 3A.

Bracket B seedings were based on points scored in preliminaries, which gave Palmetto Christian a first-round bye. Stall beat Porter-Gaud to earn a rematch with the Mount Pleasant private school but were again defeated – this time 30-23. Palmetto Christian then won against James Island 20-18 to set up a final with Wando.

Wando’s path to the final went through Georgetown and Bishop England.

Wando offensive lineman Nolan Kelleher has received 26 Division I football offers and narrowed his preferences to eight schools, according to Warriors coach Jimmy Noonan.

The rising senior picked four ACC and four SEC programs: Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State and N.C. State, and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee, respectively.

Kelleher is 6-feet-6-inches tall and weighs 306 pounds.

Chistopher DeMarco, a rising junior at Palmetto Christian Academy, and his grandfather, James Spach, won the City of Charleston parent/child golf tournament at the Charleston Municipal Course this past Saturday.

The pair shot a 69. Spach frequents the Shadowmoss Plantation course as his primary stomping grounds.

In the June 12 edition, Porter-Gaud track and field coach Larry Salley’s name was misspelled.
