Tips for staying active in the heat of summer

Summer has officially started, which means temperatures will stay in the 90s for the next few months. While many want to continue exercising in the summer months, doing a workout routine outside can be difficult – and sometimes dangerous.

As a result, many abandon their fitness regime this time of year. Dr. Bright McConnell, of Charleston Sports Medicine, offers tips to help those that want to stay in shape this summer and beat the heat.

“So many people work hard to get in shape for the summer, but once summer arrives they stop,” he said. “The heat can be unbearable, especially when the humidity is high, like it often is in Charleston. There are some simple ways to stay in shape; it just takes some planning and adjustments.”


1. Start early: Set the alarm for before 7 a.m. It is coolest before the sun rises.

2. Change it up: If the heat is too much to bear, try an indoor option.

3. Stay hydrated

4. Listen to your body: It takes a few weeks of exercising in high temperatures before a body is completely adjusted.

5. Check the humidity: The humidity level can have a direct affect on speed when running. It is much harder to breathe when a humidity level is high. Keep that in mind when setting your pace.

6. Watch what you wear: Lightweight clothing that with wicking properties work best this time of year.
