The Moultrie News’ sports reporter Tyler Heffernan was honored last month with a Certificate of Appreciation and a special coin from Lt. Col. Ed Chamberlayne, district commander of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District.

He was issued the commendation for outstanding reporting of the news of the Army Corps of Engineers throughout the year.

He has reported on the Charleston District’s highly visible Charleston Harbor Post 45 Deepening Study and the district’s complex regulatory program.

The award said that Heffernan had the knack of taking technical nature of the Corp’s projects and turning them into easy to understand news stories for the public. “He is a gifted writer who is accurate and fair and always captures the story for the reader. Heffernan covers local sports and island news in addition to his blog and regular column Eye of the Tyler. July 9 marked his one-year anniversary with the Moultrie News.

“It is an honor and a privilege to work with someone as talented as Tyler. “The local sports community has benefitted greatly from his in-depth coverage of not just scores and stand-outs but the stories behind the sports and the teams,” said Moultrie News Editor Sully Witte.

“He has taken our social media outreach to a whole new level and continues to improve the overall standing of the company and the publication in our community. I am very proud to call him a colleague.” Vickey Boyd, Publisher of the Moultrie News said Heffernan joined the Moultrie News team and never missed a beat. “It was as if he had always been with the paper. He set out and started meeting coaches and players and getting out in the community. And before we could blink he was the sports news source for East Cooper. He has grown our digital presence with web, Facebook and Twitter. My personal favorites by Tyler is the first person articles because he shows such emotion in his writing when it not an outright news story. Tyler has become an important part of our team and we are proud to have him on our staff.”
