New stewardship series provides ideas for eco-friendly ways to save

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) is teaming up with local Lowcountry eco-experts to share traditional and cutting-edge ways that we can all care for the natural world as well as our families. From backyard chickens to composting, these classes will provide a fun way for participants to learn new skills while saving money and our natural resources.

CCPRC’s partners in the series include Charleston County Recycling, Carolina Clear, Lowcountry Local First, Clemson Cooperative Extension, The Sustainability Institute and Ashley-Cooper Stormwater Education Consortium. Each program in the Stewardship Series takes place on James Island, and advance registration is required to participate. The summertime series is as follows:

Stewardship Series: Backyard Chickens

Join Lowcountry Local First for an introduction to backyard chicken basics from rules of engagement and preparing your yard to selecting your birds and keeping them happy. Ages 9 and up. Location: James Island County Park. Date: Saturday, July 13, 9 a.m.-noon. Course No. 30637. Fee: $36/$30 Charleston County Resident (CCR) Discount

Stewardship Series: Cool Ideas for Summer Energy Savings

Rising temperatures signal a perfect time to make your home more energy efficient. The Sustainability Institute will show you low and no-cost ways to save home energy. Also, access rebates, incentives and financing to make your home’s energy improvements at a reasonable cost. Ages 18 and up. Location: James Island County Park. Date: Thursday, July 18, 6 -7:30 p.m. Course No. 30635. Fee: $7/$5 CCR Discount

Stewardship Series: Build a Chicken Coop Workshop

Join Lowcountry Local First for a hands-on workshop on how to build your own backyard chicken coop. Participants will work together to construct a simple chicken coop. Ages 13 and up. Meets at: CCPRC Headquarters (861 Riverland Drive). Date: Saturday, July 20, 8 a.m.-noon, Course No. 30566. Fee: $42/$35 CCR Discount

Stewardship Series: Backyard Composting Workshop

Join Charleston County Environmental Management experts to learn what can be composted, how to create a simple composting structure, and how to prepare and maintain a practical composting system that works for you. For ages 5 and up. Location: James Island County Park. When: Wednesday, July 24, 10 -11 a.m. Course No. 30565. Fee: $7/$5 CCR Discount

Stewardship Series: Rainwater Harvesting 101

Long, hot summers can mean expensive irrigation. Join Clemson Carolina Clear to learn water-smart practices and residential rainwater harvesting. Participants will take home a preassembled rain barrel, rainwater harvesting manual, and a rain gauge. Ages 16 and up. Location: James Island County Park. When: Thursday, July 25, 3 -5 p.m. Course No.30638. Fee: $96/$80 CCR Discount
