Isle of Palms City Council seeking traffic solutions

  • Friday, July 12, 2013

We all know what July means. As much fun as hot dogs, fireworks and beach days are, summertime means sharing traffic horror stories.

Isle of Palms councilman Jimmy Carroll shared one of his in the “IOP Today” blog. “Just last week,” Carroll wrote, “it took me more than half an hour to get the 2.3 miles to my home from the office on a Friday afternoon at 6 p.m.”

Carroll assured residents that city council is actively seeking solutions to alleviate traffic jams on the island. He said Charleston County and Mount Pleasant officials each have helped with increased law enforcement and electronic signs.

Isle of Palms’ island neighbor, Sullivan’s Island, also received assistance during the Fourth of July weekend from Charleston County and Mount Pleasant, according to Sullivan’s Island town administrator Andy Benke.

Isle of Palms City Council is working with Stantec, a design engineering firm, to improve communication on the roadways. Carroll said wayfinding signs are currently being posted. He added that Stantec has also been engaged in reviewing and creating other strategies to help traffic problems.

“This is a slow, ongoing process, but it is in process,” Carroll wrote. “Parking and traffic are the big issues, and the quality of life for our residents comes first along with trying to preserve this wonderful place to live for generations to come.”
