Details: Do you have problems speaking as a result of a stroke? If so, you may qualify for a research study that is being conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina and is supported and approved by the National Institutes of Health. The treatment involves therapy that may improve speech ability. For qualified participants compensation is available for transportation costs. Details: Each meeting has a speaker presenting interesting and timely programs. The group has about 40 active members and are always looking for more.


WHAT: Low Country Leathernecks (LCL) Luncheon.

DETAILS: The Low Country Leathernecks consists of an informal group that meets each month to share the camaraderie of fellow Marines, Navy Corpsman, family members and others who may share an interest in the Marine Corps Family. Details: The Town of Mount Pleasant and Cinebarre partner to present a movie on the lawn at sunset. The movie on July 19 is “Tangled.” Residents and visitors bring blankets and lounge chairs to sit back and enjoy an outdoor movie on Cinebarre’s giant movie screen with the Ravenel Bridge and Charleston Harbor for a backdrop. There is free admission and parking. No coolers allowed; food and beverage are available for purchase.

Details: Registration for ages 5 to 18 is available now online and and at the following facilities through July 22: R.L. Jones Center, 391 Egypt Road; G.M. Darby Building, 302 Pitt Street; Park West Recreation Center, 1251 Park West Blvd. For residents the cost is $50 for non residents it is $100. Late registration begins July 23 with an additional fee of $13. No discounts may be given online.

Appreciation service

What: Friendship A.M.E. Church three-night appreciation service for the Rev. Francis McPherson

Details: The speaker for Wednesday, July 24 will be the Rev. Rose Goodwater of Holy Trinity A.M.E. Church. Thursday, July 25’s speaker will be the Rev. Richard Crummy of Greater Goodwill Church. The speaker Friday, July 26 will be the Rev. Rose Marie Williams of Calvary A.M.E. Church. Devotional service will begin at 7:30 p.m. and worship service will begin at 8 p.m. each night. The services are sponsored by the Pastor’s Aid Board and the Pulpit Aid Board.

Kids’ fair

What: Blissful Dreams Kids’ Fair

Where: Life Park Church.

Details: Kids’ Fair is a fundraiser for Blissful Dreams enabling the program to bring joy to autistic and special needs children in the Charleston area with horse therapy at Stardust Farms. There will be plenty of fun and games with food provided by Mama Brown’s BBQ. Tickets are $10 and include meal and five game tickets. Football 101

What: Fourth annual Citadel Lady Bulldogs Football 101

Where: Johnson Hagood Stadium

Details: Event includes wine and cheese reception, tours of the training and equipment room, weight training demonstration by football players, on-field practice and victory dance celebration. A catered dinner in the Pearson Club Level Lounge will be hosted by Kay Higgins, wife of Head Coach Kevin Higgins, followed by after dinner tours of stadium suites and the press box. Participants will go home with goody bags, T-shirts and door prizes. Admission price includes two free tickets to the opening game.
