Wando High School is regarded as one of the top schools in the state and it will only be boosting that reputation further with the addition of the Wando Center For Advanced Studies.

This new center is set up into three sections; the Center for Advanced Studies, the Horticulture Building and the Automotive Building.

According to Bill Lewis, capital projects manager for Charleston County School District (CCSD), progress to the new buildings is going very well. The last of the structural steel is being installed in the third section of the project.

The center is expected to accommodate around 600 students. This unique learning center is designed to educate all interested high school students in the eastern region of Charleston County, including students from Lincoln High School.

The Strategic Plan for CCSD is to allocate similar learning centers to each zone in the Charleston area to maximize education in each area.

Courses offered in this new learning center are dual credit courses which are college-level courses taken in high school that count for college credits.

Wando Principal and National Principal of the Year, Lucy Beckham is considered the star of this operation, because of her help in assembling one of the best possible project teams for this innovative learning center.

Also on board is project manager Harold Lee of Cummings Corporation. Lee headed up the construction of Cane Bay High School and Beaufort High School. LS3P Associates is responsible for the design of the Wando Center for Advanced Studies. It is one of the largest architecture firms in the Carolinas and designer of both Wando High School and West Ashley High School.

According to Lewis, this project is a clear commitment to quality education for Charleston County School District, but he profoundly credits Lucy Beckham when he says, “She’s the genius behind this whole concept. She’s worked really hard on this.”

This project could really draw some much deserved publicity for CCSD and a similar building will most likely land at West Ashley in the coming years.

An estimated completion date for construction is August 2014.
