This Plate Matters invites guests to experience some of the most historic and recognizable structures of the Lowcountry like never before. Local designers will transform these unrestored spaces for fine cuisine crafted by local chefs. Proceeds from these events will go toward helping the Preservation Society of Charleston continuing to fulfill their mission “to inspire the involvement of all who dwell in the Lowcountry to honor and respect our material and cultural heritage.”
Sites selected for supper locations are connected to the society’s Seven to Save program. Seven to Save is an annual outreach program that the Preservation Society of Charleston designed to focus the work of the organization in a proactive and constructive way, delivering intellectual and financial resources to raise awareness and support key preservation projects in the region. Seven sites, representative of seven broader issues, are announced each year during National Preservation Month in May as “Seven to Save.”

Menu: Salmorejo hearty gazpacho, carolina shrimp and summer greens, fennel, potato and orange salad, sidewinders (greendale farm cheese, zucchini pickles, spiced almonds, jamon and parsley), “sugar boo” (goat milk and peach, ice cream sandwich).
Completed between 1897 and 1902, the Trolley Barn Complex on Upper Meeting Street was a bustling hub of transportation infrastructure for the City of Charleston. At its peak use in 1921, approximately 2,000 Charlestonians were using the trolley system daily, but with the introduction of automobiles and buses it became obsolete by 1938. Later used as a bus shed, the structure was abandonded in the late 20th century. However, these industrial structures are still historically significant for our city, serving as a rare example of the architecture of transportation infrastructure. Listed as a 2013 Seven to Save site.

Menu: Pork skins with pimento cheese, Callie’s cocktail biscuits, John’s island tomato and arugula tea sandwiches, pickled shrimp with okra rice, silver queen corn salad, citrus skewered meats and israeli couscous tomato mint feta salad, grilled flatbread and assorted herbed dips, berry shortcakes.
Built in 1882 as a cotton mill, the American Tobacco Company purchased the five-story Victorian commercial building in 1912 for use as a cigar factory. American Tobacco Company was one of the largest employers in Charleston and operated until 1973. In 1945, many African American women from Local 15 of the Food, Tobacco and Allied Workers union organized a strike to address low wages and racial discrimination. On the picket line, the workers were the first to sing “We Shall Overcome” as a song of protest during the Civil Rights Movement. Representative of the 2011 Seven to Save listing of Civil Rights Era sites.

Menu: “Rum runners,” field peas and crab, “stolen tomatoes,” chanterelles and summer squash, okra pilau, guinea bog, elizabeth jenkins young’s “kiss pie” and scuppernong jam
Built in 1725 by Edisto Island rice planter Paul Hamilton, this two-story brick plantation house was acquired by the Jenkins family in 1798 and continue to own it today. Tragically, the house burned in 1929, but the ruins of its exterior and interior walls and chimneys miraculously remain as a rare artifact of the region’s colonial architecture. The grounds of Brick House feature majestic live oak trees and scenic marsh views – a perfect setting for entertaining. Listed as a 2013 Seven to Save site.
