The stars weren’t there, but that’s not with this event was about.
Mount Pleasant Recreation Department hosted the Carolina Panthers’ Play 60 event, a campaign led by the NFL to promote active youth, Wednesday morning at the Park West Track Field. Although Panthers greats like Cam Newton – who is featured in a Play 60 national commercial, Steve Smith and Charles Johnson were unable to attend because of their own team training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg.
James Millar, athletic division chief of the recreation department, said 93 children of ages 7-14 showed up.
“The kids had a lot of fun running through drills, jumping through and hitting pads, along with catching and throwing footballs,” Millar said. “We plan to hold this same camp again next year and would expect more attendance.”
The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department shares the Panthers’ mission to encourage children to be active and lead healthy lives.
