Columbia site for 10,000 Hoodie March Saturday

10,000 Hoodie March, Rally and City Vigil for Social Justice in Remembrance of Trayvon Martin and others will be held Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. It will begin at the South Carolina State House (no longer Finlay Park) and will march to the Matthew J. Perry Federal Court House.

The rally will be moderated by Cynthia Hardy. The keynote address will be given by event organizer and National Building Communities and Families chairman, Chris Sullivan. Additional speakers include: State Representative Leon Howard, Richland County Councilman Norman Jackson, the Rev. Michael Baker (National Board Member of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network), Mrs. Henri Baskins (Executive Director of the Community Relations Council), Kyle Green (chair of the 1k Hoodie March in Honor of Trayvon Martin last year in Finlay Park) and others. There will also be a live performance by Jeffrey Lampkins from American Idol.

fter the rally members of the community will march from the South Carolina State House to the Matthew J. Perry Federal Court House at 11 a.M. to join the rest of the nation in the “Justice for Trayvon 100 City Vigil). Marchers will begin at the intersection of Main and Gervais streets. The march will proceed down main street until Hampton Street. Marchers then will proceed to Hampton and Sumter streets and will continue to march down Sumter Street until the intersection of Richland and Sumter streets. Once on Richland Street marches will then surround the Matthew J. Perry Federal Court House.

Participates are strongly encourage to bring school supply items as well as non-perishable food items.

Organizers say the “non-violent” demonstration is a way to exercise their constitutional rights, sign a petition to call on the Department of Justice to act, to show their support to the Martin’s family, to help collect school supplies as well as collect non-perishable items for the homeless.
