Celebrity chef and “Restaurant Impossible” star Robert Irvine will be in Charleston July 26 to emcee the first ever Cooking Well Invitational, a one-day culinary competition and trade show emphasizing healthier ways to cook delicious and affordable meals. The event is sponsored by the South Carolina Hospital Association’s Working Well Initiative and Sodexo in partnership with the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College.
The invitational will celebrate the success of South Carolina’s hospital chefs, who are creating delicious, healthy dishes for hospital workers, patients and visitors every day. A number of hospitals across the state have received Gold Apple awards from Working Well, which means that they excel in offering delicious, nutritious food at affordable prices.
Chefs from 10 Gold Apple hospitals and their teams will compete against one another during the July 26 Invitational as they demonstrate how to convert recipes into healthier versions without sacrificing great taste. Professional chefs will judge the dishes made on site.
Teams will represent the following hospitals: Baptist Easley Hospital, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Georgetown Hospital System, Laurens County Health Care System, Oconee Medical Center, Palmetto Health, Piedmont Medical Center, Providence Hospital, Providence Hospital Northeast and the Medical University of South Carolina.
The public is invited to attend the invitational, which will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College. In addition to the competition, the event will include fun, entertaining and educational sessions throughout the day, as well as the opportunity to visit vendors offering ideas and samples for healthier meals. The registration fee for the Invitational is only $35 per person and includes a light lunch.
