High Cotton, a Maverick Southern Kitchen, is the state winner of the 2013 Restaurant Neighbor Award from the National Restaurant Association. The Restaurant Neighbor Award was created to recognize restaurants that exemplify the industry’s philanthropic spirit.

While participating in the company-wide charitable programs of Maverick Southern Kitchens, High Cotton separately conducts numerous activities. Partnering with Neighborhood House of Charleston, an organization that serves lunch Monday through Friday, High Cotton staff prepares meals for up to 200 people on a monthly basis and also serves the meals. The restaurant also works and provides staff time and food at fundraisers for the Lowcountry Food Bank; an organization that provides discounted food for the Neighborhood House of Charleston. In addition to helping those who need meals, High Cotton also supports Communities in Schools of Charleston, a nonprofit dropout prevention agency that surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Now on its 10th year, High Cotton hosts a three-course luncheon where a 100 percent of the proceeds are donated the Communities in Schools of Charleston.

Additionally, High Cotton’s general manager, Jill Maynard, has established a scholarship in her late husband’s name at a Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College. Every year the community joins together for a fishing tournament fundraiser and now, just a couple of years later the scholarship is endowed and has helped many students reach their academic goals in their culinary career.

“Dick Elliott, founder and owner of Maverick Southern Kitchens, has inspired me to operate business and my life in ways that benefit the community,” Jill Maynard said. “I have learned that giving is more rewarding than taking.”

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and Restaurant Neighbor Award founding partner American Express developed the award to raise awareness about the restaurant industry’s contributions in local communities across the country and to inspire other restaurant owners and operators to showcase their enormous contributions in their communities.
