The Mount Pleasant Track Club continues to cement itself among the premier track and field clubs in the country. Thirty-six members, competing in 47 different events, qualified for the United States of America Track and Field (USATF) Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. this week.

Nineteen of those youth athletes are ranked in the top 12 of their respective events in the country.

Those 36 qualifiers reached their national meet aspirations after a strong showing at the Region 4 track meet in Orlando, Fla. over the July 4th weekend. The region covers South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Reid Haigler won the 3,000-meter race, Terrell Venning championed the discus event and Worth Burnette was the pole vault winner.

The club held its final preparatory practice Monday at the Park West track. ““This was our best showing ever at Regionals,” coach Tami Dennis said.

“We were put in a new region with Florida and Georgia and knew the competition would be stiff, but the kids responded with huge PRs (personal records).”

The complete list of athletes competing in the national meet are listed at the conclusion of the article, categorized by age groups. Nationals began Monday and conclude the following Sunday.

“In the past we were excited about going to nationals,” Dennis said, “now, we’re hungry to compete and reach for that All-American position (Top 8 finish at nationals).”
