In one of the largest offsite adoption events in its 35-year history, Pet Helpers found homes for nearly all of the available kittens in its shelter on Saturday at Kittenpalooza.

Held at Northwoods Mall, adopters turned out in droves to form a line before the event even officially opened at 11 a.m. The no-kill shelter on James Island did a record 19 adoptions in the first 45 minutes and executive director Kevin Ryan went back twice for more kittens.

“It was great to see so many people turn out for this event,” Ryan said. “The people of Charleston and its surrounding suburbs care about animals and its invigorating to see so many step up in the midst of an aggressive kitten season to welcome new animals into their homes. Every kitten adopted out today means that we can save that many more going forward.”

Kittens went for a drastically reduced fee of $25 which included spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, microchip and 30 days of pet insurance. Attendees got to spin the Wheel of Furrtune for a chance to win Pet Helpers prizes, gift cards or a fee waived adoption.

Local pet-themed vendors helped to add to the excitement of Kittenpalooza. Representatives from Keegan Spera Photography, Tucker’s Treats, Edible Chair Studio, Find Love In Pitbulls (FLIP) and Pet Helpers own iniative, Unchain Charleston, were present.
