Charleston locals receive Lung Association national award

  • Thursday, July 25, 2013

Two Charleston residents were awarded a 2013 American Lung Association Volunteer Excellence Award at a ceremony late last month in Manhattan Beach, California. These two outstanding local volunteers were selected to receive this national recognition for giving back to the American Lung Association and helping make its lifesaving mission a reality.

Michele Seekings, a neuroscience account manager for Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, has been an active volunteer with the Lung Association for nearly a decade and has served as the Coastal Board Chair for the last three years. As someone who suffers from asthma, Seekings has dedicated much of her time to the organization’s programs, advocacy efforts and fundraising events in the Charleston community. Seekings also serves on the American Lung Association of the Southeast Charter Board of Directors and the Nationwide Assembly.

Teenage Benjamin Gilbert has raised more than $20,000 and volunteered more than 500 hours over the last five years for the American Lung Association. After struggling with asthma throughout his childhood, Gilbert “wanted to make sure no one had to deal with it alone.” At the age of 12 he began volunteering with the American Lung Association and has since become a local spokesperson for the cause, promoting the importance of lung health by appearing on television shows and speaking at schools in the community.

“It is truly an honor that two of the three recipients of the Volunteer Excellence Award hail from the Palmetto State,” said Martha Bodgan, CEO of the American Lung Association in South Carolina. “Both Michele and Ben are exceptional examples of the dedicated volunteers who help us fight for air every day.”
