Last time we saw Jonathan Miller’s Sammy the Wonder Dachshund, he was searching for kangaroos in Africa. Now Sammy, a fact-checker for the Internet, has his biggest assignment yet: a trip into outer space. It’s a mission he’s dreamed of since he was just a young pup at space camp.

In “Sammy in Space,” the third book in the “Sammy the Wonder Dachshund” series, Sammy is charged with proving whether or not Pluto is a planet (some folks on the Internet have dubbed it a “dwarf planet”). But before he can rocket off to the stars, he must go through astronaut training, studying for hours and learning to fly a plane, operate a parachute and build a shelter. Finally, he blasts off on a thrilling journey that takes him to each of the planets in the solar system. At last, he arrives at Pluto and gathers some surprising information to take home to Earth.

Come along as Sammy not only learns about the planets in our solar system, but also discovers a thing or two about working hard to reach your dreams.

Miller layered pieces of card stock and construction paper to create the highly detailed illustrations included in Sammy in Space — a process that he loves to describe for the students he speaks with at schools throughout the Carolinas. This spring, the children were amazed to hear that the illustrations for his latest book took an average of 30 hours per page to build.

“The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Dachshund: Sammy in Space” is available online at www.sammydogbooks.com and locally at Wonder Works, Blue Bicycle Books, Sugar Snap Pea, Barton’s and the Historic Charleston Foundation.
