Childhood obesity is higher than ever – more than doubling in children in the last 30 years. The numbers are just as sobering in South Carolina with more than 15 percent of children and teens classified as overweight. Curbing this epidemic requires teaching children about healthy eating and promoting physical activity.
Beginning Aug. 21, CrossFit Mount Pleasant will offer an after-school program for children that will do just that. Children will participate in structured workouts and games, helping them see physical activity as fun and enjoyable. Children also will have time for free play and to complete their homework.
Classes are be taught by Tina Whetzel, CrossFit Mount Pleasant Owner, CrossFit Level 1 and CrossFit Kids Certified Trainer, along with Clint Fisher, who also has his CrossFit Level 1 and Endurance certificates. CrossFit Mount Pleasant is located at 3400 Turgot Lane within the Park West subdivision on Highway 17 North.
“It’s sad to see children struggling with their weight and the resulting health complications like diabetes and high blood pressure,” Whetzel said. “We want to show children how to enjoy exercise and healthy eating and create long-lasting good habits.”
The program for kindergarten through fifth grades is from 3- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 4-5:30 p.m. for children in grades sixth through eighth. Children must be picked up by 5:30 p.m. (there are fees for late pickup). The program is open to any child but busing only will be available from the following schools to CrossFit Mount Pleasant: Laurel Hill Elementary, Pinckney Elementary, Jennie Moore Elementary, Laing Middle School.
Cost is $65 a week and part-time pricing is available at $45 for two days a week or $55 for three days a week. There is a $10 sibling discount. The drop-in rate is $25 (sibling discount not applicable). Children should bring their own snack.
Space is limited to 75 children; contact Tina Whetzel at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 843-475-2459 to reserve your spot. Registration deadline is Aug. 10.
Classes for older children are also available:
• Girls only for sixth to 12th grades from 5-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
• Boys only for sixth to 12th grades from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
The cost for these classes is $120 a month ($99 for siblings and for current CrossFit Mount Pleasant members).
