U.S National Rugby team takes on Canada in Aug. 17 match

  • Monday, August 5, 2013

The United States National Rugby Team returns to Charleston for a must-win World Cup Qualifier match vs. a powerful Canadian National Team, under the lights inside Blackbaud Stadium, Saturday night, Aug 17 at 6:30 p.m. The last time these two teams met in South Carolina, USA defeated Canada on July 4, 2009, by a score of 12-6. It was the first ever International Rugby Match played and won by the USA on South Carolina soil.

Many U.S. and Canadian dignitaries will be attending the match, including thousands of Rugby players and fans from all over the country. The USA vs. Canada match will also be televised internationally.

What makes USA Rugby players so worthy of local and national support is that they each earn only $100 per day as stipend during match weeks – barely compensation at all compared to NFL opulence, according to Baron Hanson.

Rugby men (and women) sacrifice their bodies and work hard for years on end to rise up through the ranks in hope of being selected to play rugby for their country. “Not for glory, nor for riches, but for honor alone” is a common rugby player mantra worldwide.

National-level coaching clinics will descend upon Charleston during the week leading up to match day, getting youth, high school and college players excited for kick-off. Tickets range from $15 to $100 via http://www.usarugby.org. All ages are welcome.
