Predictably unpredictable

  • Thursday, August 8, 2013

Officers were on routine patrol around 1 a.m. one evening when they saw a man they knew well. He was in a gas station parking lot talking to another man at the gas pumps. The officers recognized the van he was most likely driving as well.

He had been arrested in that van just a month prior for multiple traffic charges that included driving under suspension 5th, habitual traffic offender and others.

The officer also knew the van was not registered and, according to the report, this suspect takes license plates from other vehicles and puts them on his van.

They pulled in where the suspect could not see them to observe his actions, according to the report, because the man was unpredictable based on past incidents. He was holding a brown paper bag as he finished his conversation. He then got into the van and drove off, right past the officers. They made a U-turn and followed him. The report said, as predicted the suspect tried to evade them and sped down the highway, took sharp turns onto dirt roads and finally stopped in front of a house and took off running into the woods behind it.

Back up officers could not find him and eventually they called off the search.

It turns out the license plate on the van was stolen out of Charleston. The van was towed and the brown paper bag the man had been holding earlier was taken for evidence as was his cell phone that he dropped when he took off running. Warrants were issued for his arrest when he could be located.
