Children’s Discovery Center, a child care and early education provider opened its first South Carolina location and hosted a grand opening event Saturday, Aug. 3. More than 350 people attended the event that took place at the new facility located at 1110 Venning Road. Special guests included Mayor Billy Swails and Cooper River Bridge namesake Arthur Ravenel Jr.

Ravenel attended the pre-event ribbon cutting celebration to autograph the large replica of the Cooper River Bridge inside the child care center. The bridge is just one of many architectural features that create a true hands-on learning environment for Lowcountry children. The afternoon public portion of the event was geared toward families and featured a variety of children’s activities including live music, painting, storytelling, marine biology demonstrations, dance lessons and more. Tours of the new facility, refreshments and enrollment opportunities were available to guests.

During the event, attendees were introduced to Children’s Discovery Center’s educational philosophy, based off the globally-recognized program Reggio Emilia. Reggio Emilia began in Italy in the 1940s and is known for its “Discovery through 100 Languages” model that works toward empowering children and encouraging physical, emotional, creative and intellectual growth. The center also includes children’s museum exhibits in a discovery room as well as throughout the classrooms that reflect the Lowcountry community, culture and surroundings.

The center accepts enrollment applications for children ages 6 weeks and 5 years old. A before- and after-school program will also be available for children in kindergarten through fourth grade.
