Celebrate Farmers Market Month at local markets

  • Sunday, August 18, 2013

Local farmers market vendors are asking everyone to come celebrate Farmers Market Month in August by shopping at a farmers market in your community.

“Our market offers what people want: freshness, authenticity, value, and connections to the farmers who grow their food,” said Tracy Richter, market manager at The Mount Pleasant Farmers Market.

Farmers Market Month is an extension of National Farmers Market Week, which runs Aug. 4-10, and celebrates farmers markets as critical food hubs that bolster regional economies, while increasing access to nutritious foods.

Here in South Carolina, local farmers markets have grown in popularity as more people are looking for and buying locally-grown produce and agricultural products. Today there are more than 120 community-based farmers markets located across the state, as well as the three State Farmers Markets located in West Columbia, Florence and Greenville. Farmers markets are not only a way to connect with the farmers who grow our foods, but a fun family outing and offer activities for all ages.

The Mount Pleasant market is open every Tuesday from April 9 to Oct. 8 from 3:30 p.m. until dusk. For more information visit www.ComeOnOverMP.com or e-mail the market manager at farmersmarket@tompsc.com.
