Explore Bull Island and help Loggerhead Turtles

On Saturday, Aug. 31, Coastal Expeditions is co-sponsoring a fundraiser on Bulls Island in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge along with the SEWEE Association and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services.

Bob Raynor, author of the book “Exploring Bull Island” will be leading the island portion of the expedition, leading participants from the south end of the island to the north end along the beach. This is 7.5 mile hike that will take them through the Boneyard and along some of the many Loggerhead nests that are situated on the island.

Coastal Expeditions’ 49-passenger ferry, Caretta, will provide transportation to and from the island. The boat will depart from Garris Landing in Awendaw at 7:30 a.m. and return at 2:30 p.m.

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is the most significant nesting site of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) north of Cape Canaveral, Fla. This year has set a record for the most nests recorded in the the refuge with volunteers categorizing well over 1800 nests. The efforts that the Turtle Team in Cape Romain have put forth is outstanding and this walk is a way to provide support for their efforts. All proceeds from tickets sold will be donated to the SEWEE Association to help fund this project.
