East Cooper football enthusiasts, if you haven’t become acquainted with Wando tailback Kenny Waring, now’s the time.

The host Warriors defeated rival James Island this past Saturday night in the season opener for both teams, 39-12. Waring rushed for 116 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns.

After both teams failed to score in their respective Sertoma Football Classic appearances two days prior (Hanahan 24, Wando 0; Stratford 27, James Island 0), there were question marks about the offenses. The first quarter came and went with only a 3-0 Warriors advantage.

But, Wando started its scoring melee with a 14-point second quarter and a 13-point third quarter to break it open. Waring’s first trip to the end zone came late in the second period with a 10-yard dash.

He scored again on a 43-yard catch and run during the Warriors’ first offensive possession of the second half and then once more minutes later on another 10-yard run.

After Wando’s scrimmage loss to Hanahan on Thursday – in which most offensive starters only played two series – coach Jimmy Noonan said the team needed more repetitions. Storms earlier in the week caused practice cancellations, and with heavy losses to graduation from last season’s team, Wando needs more time on the field together.

Quarterback Dalton Stubbs threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Darius Wade, backup quarterback Bailey Hart ran in a 21-yard score and kicker Clayton Rosenbaum booted two field goals (26, 31 yards).

Stubbs finished his first varsity start with 15 carries for 164 yards and was 13-of-25 for 236 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Defensively, Wando was led by junior linebacker Tyler Ragsdale, who collected nine solo tackles, three assists and forced a fumble. Last season’s leading tackler Matt Norman had an interception with three solo tackles and three assists.
