Beaufort football gets early lead, hangs on to upset Wando

Last year, the only thing significant about 17 points in the Beaufort vs. Wando football game was that it was half of the total points the Warriors would put up in a shutout effort.

This year, Beaufort led 17-0 in the first half and held off a Wando rally to win its first game of the season and drop the visiting Warriors to 1-1.

Wando quarterback Dalton Stubbs connected with tight end Zola Davis on a 5-yard score in the second quarter. Stubbs ran in another touchdown from seven yards out in the third quarter, but the 3-point deficit was as close as the Warriors would get.

According to The Island Packet newspaper, Beaufort fumbled four times in the second half and six times total. Erik Blakely led Beaufort with 123 rushing yards, including a 13-yard score in the second quarter.

Beaufort turned up the defense when Wando pulled within three points. The Warriors failed to score, even after a first down and goal with three yards until pay dirt. They missed a field goal on that drive. On its next offensive series, Wando started in the red zone after recovering a Beaufort fumble but finished that drive with a blocked field goal.

Kicker Clayton Rosenbaum again missed a field goal on the following drive, this time a 40-yarder. Wando turned the ball over on downs after that, and finally, ended another drive by way of an interception.

Wando tailback Kenny Waring rushed for 111 yards on 13 carries. Stubbs added 70 yards on the ground and 81 through the air on 9-of-17 passing. Trevor Pedersen had a team-high 44 yards on five receptions.

On defense, Tyler Ragsdale again led Wando in tackles with six solo and six assists. He also had a pair of fumble recoveries.
