Paul Gawrych

Former Mount Pleasant Town Councilman Paul Gawrych filed to run for a seat of council again. He previously served 12 years.

In a statement he said hundreds of supporters have reached out to him over the past six weeks urging him to run for mayor. “Zoe (his wife) and I thought about it over and over and while Zoe was very supportive of pursuing the position, we needed to know where my heart and head would take me; the reality settled in as I knew what it would take to honor that position. Simply put, I could not come to a place of peace knowing all that was in front of us and I was not going to short change this great town. Our time will come one day,” he said.

Gawrych said he was confident the best way to serve Mount Pleasant is by pursuing a position on town council. “We all know we are going to have a new mayor and possibly several new council members. My experience, leadership and level head will be vital in the coming years as we have come so far and we still have much to do,” he said.

He chose to take a political break just before the November 2011 election. But soon chose to run for Charleston County Auditor. He won the Republican primary but was defeated in the general election.

“There is no greater place to live in South Carolina and there is no greater place to raise a family. We know as both our babies have just left the nest,” he said. “In addition there is no greater place to serve either, and this town deserves dedicated public servants that understand being held accountable.”
